Why You Should Have an Outfit Change on Your Wedding Day

As with anything, this is entirely down to the individual, your budget and your vibe-I know brides who stayed in their dress the whole day because they loved it that much and they baulked at the idea of spending £££ amount on their ‘outfit’ to not make the most of it. I, however, am a BIG advocate of a change and I reckon that by the end of this you will be too!

Things to consider:

-What to change into

-Will you change your shoes, any jewellery and or accessories

-When you’ll change

-Where you’ll change

Jumpsuit, Midi or Mini Moment?

When asked about whether I would change outfits I remember explaining that I could imagine the sort of dress I’d walk down the aisle in, and I could imagine the sort of outfit that I would dance and celebrate in-I knew they were different aesthetics. The difference being this, during the day I wanted to be Maria from the Sound of Music but for the evening I wanted to be a modern, sleek bond girl. I opted to change into a white tuxedo style jumpsuit for the evening-I felt confident, cool and, importantly, really comfortable!

I was fortunate enough to visit Harmur Bridal ‘The Modern Bride’  trunk show last month and if you’re looking for inspiration for a mini dress moment in the evening then look no further. Harmur is designed by women for women, with modern, sleek and dare I say it but sexy designs…I’m talking sequins, silk, feathers, backless, bows, cut out, buttons. The ladies are also so helpful and passionate about what they do.

Shoes, Jewellery and Accessories?

I changed out of my bright pink Jimmy Choo’s into personalised white converse that were embroidered with my new surname for the evening. Not only was this really practical, but I cannot tell you the joy it gave me revealing the embroidered touch to guests on the dance floor. My converse still put a smile on my face every time I wear them. Though I didn’t change my jewellery, I did add to my accessories-going from one single pearl hairband to a double.

When to change

Assuming that you’re having a first dance, I’d suggest considering changing either just before or after it. These are the questions I’d ask yourself to help decide if you’re unsure,

-What ‘style’ of song or dance have you chosen? I.e. are you having a slower classic ballad/love song or something with a quicker pace?

-How easily can you move in your dress/day outfit? Practice dancing at one of your fittings!

-After the first dance, your friends and family will be on the dance-floor, how does the thought of missing this whilst you change make you feel?

Where to change

If you’re getting married at a venue where you’re also staying the night then this will be easy for you. If, however, your reception is in a marquee off the beaten track or is being held somewhere where you won’t be staying the night then you need to think ahead and ensure,

-Your on the day co-ordinator/trusted friend/family member has your evening outfit in their car which is parked at the reception.

-You can put your dress/day outfit in their car overnight to collect the following day.

-Ask ahead if there’s a room you can change in, or consider the loos/catering tent. I changed in the portaloo at my wedding, and whilst not the most glamorous spot it did the job!

I hope this helps, get in touch with any questions but have fun and please send me the photos!
